Humble beginnings
Pete D. Williams, MD was born in Manchester, Jamaica and grew up in a single parent family as the third of five children. With considerable assistance that came from many quarters, and particularly from his eldest brother, he completed High school as well as college, obtaining an Associate degree from West Indies College. Upon completion of these first two years of college, and after having worked for two years at the institution from which he graduated it was time to move on. At the age of twenty-two, Pete immigrated to the United States to continue his education at Oakwood College in Huntsville, Alabama. After the required two additional years, he completed an undergraduate degree with a major in Biology in 1984, with his sights on starting medical school that very year, but that was not to be.
He was bitterly disappointed when those plans failed to materialize, a situation for which there had been no contingency planning. That unhappy state of affairs prompted a move to the New York area where Pete worked at a number of jobs including building construction and news services, finally settling in as a high school teacher for a number of years. In 1993 he enrolled in the State University of New York (SUNY) system as a medical student and moved into a career path on which he is still traveling. Pete lived in and practiced medicine in the New York metropolitan area until the summer of 2007 when his family made a decision that they should relocate to the state of Georgia, eventually settling in the Atlanta area.
A love for books
Books have always been my steady companions from the earliest years and although my reading interests were broad, covering a wide array of topics; history, religion, and science held special appeal. Some of the earliest recollection of books included a tattered copy of Uncle Arthur’s Bedtime Stories, a complete set of The Science Library, and an old book entitled, "They Who Knew Jesus" and a really ancient work entitled, "Builders of the Empire". Interestingly, except for the Science Library set which was purchased new, and he would imagine, at great cost, all the others were old and abandoned books that he fortuitously stumbled upon. Having then been duly impressed by books, he suspects that writing came as a natural outgrowth. The written word has the unique ability to reach deep into an individual’s inner being, inspire and energize durably to a degree as no other medium can. One of Pete's major goals in writing is to inspire as well as to initiate meaningful introspection, the first step in making lasting, life changes.
A source of inspiration
Writing a book for Christian readers is a logical outgrowth of speaking publicly in church services and other similar venues. Although Pete did a fair bit of speaking on different levels starting from an early age, even attempting preaching, he did not excel at this activity. However, he was enthusiastic as well as persistent and regarded these exercises as a valuable avenue for sharing the Christian gospel as well as for personal development. It is Pete's sincerest hope that the books, quotes, essays, and other materials that he has prepared will inspire, embolden and transform the individual who dares to be everything he or she was destined to be.
